Heavy-duty vehicles, such as large trucks and buses, must pass regular emissions tests in order to have their registrations renewed. For vehicles older than five years of age, they must have emissions testing every year in order to renew the registration. Drive Clean applies to heavy-duty diesel vehicles registered anywhere in Ontario and to heavy-duty non-diesel vehicles in southern Ontario.
As of September 1, 2011, vehicles seven years or older will need a test for registration renewal. This is different from the current requirement, which requires a test for vehicles five years of age or older. An emissions test pass is also required to transfer vehicle ownership for vehicles older than the current year.
How do you know when it’s time for an emissions test? When the Ministry of Transportation sends you a license renewal application for your vehicle’s registration renewal, vehicles that require tests will be marked with an asterisk (*).
